La Spezia

PDF  Print

It is the capital of the province, the city with the richest offer of services . Its origins are ancient , but it’s in the last two centuries that the city has grown and changed his face. Big changes are being made also to this day .

In the past, the Genoese domination never granted free port to the small town of La Spezia nor the possibility to have any kind of organized landing .

The turning point came with the arrival of Napoleon, who decided to build his arsenal inside the Gulf , having regard to the particular orographic conditions . The idea was achieved by the Piedmonteses , who completed the work in 1869. La Spezia became quickly the most important centre of the area , also because in 1891 he began the construction of the cargo port , one of the most important strong points of the city today.

The city suffered a terrible bombing during the Second World War, but the reconstruction was rapid and the expansion unstoppable : in the 70's La Spezia had over 125,000 inhabitants.

The industrial crisis of the 90s and the reduction of military activities led today the city to confront itself with its history and its economy , to exploit to the best its potential and the available space. The new Waterfront, designed by the renowned Spanish architect José Llavador, and the recovery of large civilian and military areas are expected to give new life to the economy and to better accommodate the increasing number of tourists .

The navy yard and the Naval Museum

For decades, the arsenal of La Spezia built the most impressive battleships of the Kingdom of Italy. Today, its functions are limited to the maintenance of naval units in the North Tyrrhenian Sea. Most of the structures, such as docks and the drawbridge are still as they were built. To take a dip in the history of the Navy in La Spezia you just have to visit the Naval Museum.

Campiglia and Tramonti

The wine cellars on the edge of the hill that drops inaccessible in the waves of the sea, for centuries have produced the famous Sciacchetrà. The dusty ground was domesticated in terraces that are slowly returning to its former glory, and vines join the prickly pears and saffron, new cultivations that give good results. The Man has done so much to make this place unique, and looking just once to the sun that hides itself in the sea of the Cinque Terre you understand why the residents have done everything possible to survive here.
