Castelnuovo Magra

PDF  Print

The borough, which has been awarded the orange flag by the Italian touring club, is located on the top if the Bastione hill and offers to his visitors a breathtaking view over the valley. “It is like looking at the world form its highest mountains” someone says. The panorama is absolutely incredible. The Magra River, the coast, the Apuan Alps, the islands of the Tuscan archipelago and Corsica they all dance under your eyes as it only happen in the most beautiful artworks. The slopes, crossed by old trails, gently turn into olive yards and vineyards which hide the secrets of an ancient history: from the Roman Empire to the middle ages, when those lands were claimed by the empire as well as by the Church. In 1212 the village then swore allegiance to the bishop Marzucco and consequently had been fortified. The fights went on until the 1306, when the famous Dante Alighieri came to solve the issue.

The sunny hills
The slopes in the area of Castelnuovo and Ortonovo, which are exposed to the wormth of the afternoon sun, are almost entirely planted with vines. It is on these terraces that the Vermentino grapes grow to be lately transformed by knowledgeable oenologists into the Vermentino dei Colli di Luni DOC: a white wine, fresh and dry, that remembers the soil of these lands.

Luni today is part of the municipality of Ortonovo but in the Roman times it was one of the most beautiful cities of northern Italy. Its beauty was largely due to the use of the white marble of Carrara, whose discovery by the locals turned the city into an economical and strategic center. Luni in fact became an important harbor not just for its marble shipments, but also the shipments of wood, wines and crafted marbles. Moreover at the time it was just on the boarder and the armies could not go further if not explicitly authorized by the senate. Passing the centuries Luni became an episcopal possession, but in the IX century the barbaric invasions caused its downfall.
