Bolano

PDF  Print

The first people to live in the area of Bolano, on the natural terrace that overlooks the confluence of the Vara and of the Magra river, were the Liguri Apuani, whose remains were found in 1882.

In the II century A.C. the roman army overcame after decades of fights and defeats, the resistance of the Aupani and gave the conquered lands to the veterans: among them was Vetius Bolanus, whom the village was named after.

With the Lobards dominion Bolano became autonomous and the inhabitants in the following centuries rebelled against the dominion of Malaspina in order to be dominated by the Republic of Genoa.

The territory of Bolano comprises an alluvial plain where it is possible to see the traditional characteristics of the Ligurian landscape, with its many terraces and the vast expanse of olive yards occasionally becoming wine yards. There are also many chestnut forests, live oak and elms.

The confluence of the two rivers makes the landscape absolutely unique, populated by rare and delicate species. It is not surprising then that the Y made by the two rivers has become part of the natural park of Montemarcello-Magra (http://ente.parcomagra.it/sezioni.php?seid=2344).

Alta Via of the Ligurian Mountains

From Ceparana, a fraction of Bolano, it starts, or it arrives – it depends on the perspective of the observer- the Alta Via of the Ligurian Mountains, a trekking trail 442 km long that runs along the border of the Ligurian coast.

The track is divided into 44 legs and the difficulty of each leg is indicated by the red- white-red trail mark with the letter “AV”. The occidental end of the trail is in Ventimiglia, on the border with France. The Alta Via is entirely walkable and long parts are attainable by bike or on horse. Some of the legs are driveable by car or by motorbike on asphalt or dirty roads.
